NEVADA FACULTY ALLIANCE
TMCC-NFA LOCAL 6766

HISTORY

First established in 1983, the Nevada Faculty Alliance quickly grew with advocacy chapters at all eight institutions in what was then the University and Community College System of Nevada. By the early 1990s, faculty at Truckee Meadows Community College began gathering signatures from academic and administrative faculty to support the TMCC-NFA as an official collective bargaining organization. Officers drafted the bylaws at this time and on November 18, 1992, the UCCSN Board of Regents approved TMCC-NFA as the first collective bargaining unit representing higher education professionals in Nevada.

There were challenges along the way. NFA turned back an attempt to decertify the chapter in 1995 with a contract ratification vote on April 5. The April 12, 1995, edition of the Las Vegas Review Journal reported, "Members of the Nevada Faculty Alliance at Truckee Meadows Community College have approved a contract with the school. The 54-42 vote voids an election to decertify the union."

In 2022, AAUP finalized an affiliation with the American Federation of Teachers/AFL-CIO, collectively representing more than 300,000 members in higher education across the country. Through this affiliation, TMCC-NFA became a legally-recognized union chapter and on August 1, 2022, was designated as AFT Local 6766.
