TMCC-NFA faculty contract heads to ratification vote

23 Mar 2026 12:20 PM | Jim New (Administrator)

Teams from TMCC‑NFA and TMCC Administration successfully concluded negotiations for a new faculty contract on March 20. With TMCC President Jeff Alexander’s acceptance, the proposed agreement now moves to a faculty ratification vote.

Voting Details

Eligible faculty members will receive an email from ElectionBuddy.com containing a secure link to the online ballot.

  • Voting opens: April 20
  • Voting closes: May 1
  • Results announced: May 4

If the contract is ratified, TMCC‑NFA will forward it to the TMCC Administration for submission to NSHE for final review and inclusion on the Board of Regents agenda at their quarterly meeting on June 11–12 at UNR.

Because this meeting will be held in Reno, faculty members are encouraged to attend the Board of Regents’ public comment period to show their support.

If approved by the Board of Regents, the new contract will take effect on July 1 and remain in place for up to five years. The agreement may be reopened for early negotiations in the third year, at the request of either TMCC‑NFA or the administration.

Key Highlights of the Proposed Contract

Equity and Representation

A significant portion of negotiations focused on ensuring that administrative faculty, librarians, and counselors receive contract language that is equitable with that of instructional faculty.

New Benefits

The proposed contract introduces several new benefits, including:

  • Regular increases to summer teaching rates, beginning in 2027, based on the Higher Education Price Index (HEPI)
  • The ability for faculty to use a personal day on a teaching day

Strengthened Faculty Rights

Faculty rights are strengthened through:

  • Improved intellectual property protections
  • Clearer due process for faculty involved in the student complaint process

Structural and Compensation Changes

  • Academic Program Coordinators and Academic Program Directors are consolidated into a single group called Accredited Program Leaders (APL)
  • Department Chairs retain their status as full members of the collective bargaining unit, while remaining compliant with the NSHE Code
  • The Department Chair point system has been revised to reduce pay and release‑time volatility
  • For the first time in over 20 years, Department Chair stipends will increase
  • APL stipends will also increase to promote equity with Chairs

Attendance Requirements

While TMCC‑NFA was unsuccessful in removing requirements to attend commencement and convocation, important flexibility was added:

  • Faculty may be excused from required events
  • Faculty are required to attend only one ceremony per year
  • Other completion events—such as program graduations or pinning ceremonies—may substitute for commencement

Proposals Not Accepted

The administration did not accept TMCC‑NFA proposals related to faculty input in office reassignments.

Recommendation

The proposed contract represents meaningful progress across compensation, equity, and faculty rights. For these reasons, the TMCC‑NFA officers and negotiating team recommend a “YES” vote for ratification.
