Resistance necessary to fight partisan efforts to weaken higher education and erode faculty rights
NFA will defend faculty targeted or accused of violating unjust policies
A wave of coordinated, ideologically-driven policies and regulations which limit higher education's core principles of free speech, academic freedom, tenure, and shared governance has been building since 2020 and is now washing ashore in Nevada. These attacks are the result of a pressure campaign coordinated through multiple partisan think tanks who fabricate and amplify disinformation to whip up moral outrage in order to chill, if not outright prohibit, classroom discussions, research, and campus activities in topics with which they disagree.
Some members of the Nevada Board of Regents have embraced this propaganda. By making restrictive policy proposals advanced by this network, and even inviting one of the think tanks in question to make a presentation on higher education governance, these Regents expose themselves as partisans who are hostile to faculty rights, diversity, and liberal education values. Unfortunately, they sometimes succeed despite vigorous opposition from NFA and other campus groups.
The Nevada Faculty Alliance will continue to passionately oppose all efforts to diminish faculty rights and protections, or weaken the foundational principles that made the American higher education model the global gold standard. We encourage all NSHE professionals to actively join us in this resistance. NFA will actively defend the fundamental rights of free speech and academic freedom for all its members, and by extension, all others in the profession.

NFA State Board establishes ambitious goals for 2024-25
Following a year that included NFA leading the drive for historic cost of living adjustments for faculty, robust membership growth exceeding 20%, and the restoration of an inactive chapter at Great Basin College, members of the State Board raised the bar for goals in the new academic year.
At their quarterly meeting in July, the officers set targets for 15% membership growth, revisions to policies and statutes governing higher education collective bargaining in Nevada, expansion of collective bargaining rights to the university level, and an enhanced presence at all levels of shared governance.
The members of the State Board also encourage campus chapters to establish their own set of goals that not only support the State Board goals, but address local issues as well. Progress toward achieving these goals will be reported at all Board meetings and updates will be published periodically in the Dispatch.

We encourage all of our members in good standing to consider joining us in the work of our various committees which are listed below.
To learn more, email stateboard@nevadafacultyalliance.org or contact your chapter's president. If you're ready to sign up, please complete this online form.

Standing committees
The NFA Bylaws establishes four standing committees. The workload for each is on-going but may vary depending on their charge. Some are impacted by the political calendar, others are active on an as-needed basis. Each committee is chaired by a member selected by the State Board:
- NFA Political Action Committee
- State Collective Bargaining Steering Committee
- Government Relations Committee
- Legal Defense Committee

Candidate outreach chats
As the election season ramps up, the NFA will make candidate endorsements based on a series of outreach "chats" organized by the NFA-PAC. We will do all we can to ensure that individuals who are reasonable and allies to our cause are successful at the polls and partisan extremists are defeated.
We invite members to sign up to participate in our chats with candidates. The series of meetings will be scheduled according to the availability of candidates, and participation by members is flexible depending on their interest in specific candidates and scheduling.

Kent Ervin and AAUP President Irene Mulvey
NFA Past President Kent Ervin was honored by the American Associations of University Professors with the 2024 Outstanding Achievement Award at the AAUP Biennial Meeting in Washington last month. Established in 2016, the award is given to an AAUP member for outstanding chapter- or conference-level work that advances academic freedom or shared governance, and ensures higher education's contribution to the common good.
While making the presentation, AAUP President Irene Mulvey cited Ervin's years of service as an NFA officer, both at the chapter and state levels, as well as his dedicated advocacy for higher education as a registered lobbyist in the state legislature. In his nomination, Ervin was recognized for continuing to stand up for those in more vulnerable positions and working tirelessly on behalf of faculty across the state of Nevada, despite his recent retirement from being a full professor at UNR.
