 MEMBERSHIP

Visit TMCC-NFA during the August 15 kickoff activities and pick up new SWAG

New TMCC-NFA t-shirt

Again this year, TMCC-NFA officers will staff a booth in the campus plaza during the Fall Semester kickoff activities on August 15. Members are invited to grab their share of new t-shirts, buttons and tchotchkes. Non-members can complete a membership application, then dip into the goodies.

Besides the opportunity to catch up with colleagues after the break, and handing out SWAG, we will also have a flip chart and markers where we invite members to share ideas for the upcoming collective bargaining agreement negotiations.

 GOVERNANCE

First chapter meeting of academic year set for August 30

All rank and file academic and administrative faculty are encouraged to attend the first TMCC-NFA chapter meeting of the 2024-25 academic year. It will be held at 8:30 AM, Friday, August 30, in RDMT 333. Those individuals who are unable to attend in person may join us via Zoom.

Preparing for the upcoming contract negotiations will be the primary focus of TMCC-NFA this year and we are planning to start mapping our strategy at this first meeting. We hope to have an unprecedented amount of input and participation from our members in this effort.

Other topics include the introduction of the new chapter officers and our annual goals for the academic year. See the agenda and feel free to contact any TMCC-NFA officer with suggestions you have for meeting topics.

 POLITICAL ACTION

NFA members urged to join AFL-CIO Super Walk on August 17 to support education-friendly candidates

We are entering the home stretch of the 2024 election cycle and the AFL-CIO* is urging all members of the Nevada Faculty Alliance to get active in helping elect labor- and education-friendly candidates by participating in a Super Walk, Saturday, August 17.

The event will begin at 9:00 AM with a breakfast and speakers at the union hall for Local 350 of the plumbers and pipefitters, 1110 Greg Street in Sparks. Following a brief training session at 9:30 AM, participants will take to the streets for their designated areas. While most participants will be knocking on doors to visit with voters, some participants will also be needed to drive the others to their areas. The day will conclude back in Sparks with a debrief session and lunch.

If you are interested in joining the effort, please contact Jim New at jim.new@nevadafacultyalliance.org. We hope for a strong showing from TMCC-NFA.

*Through our affiliation with the American Federation of Teachers, the Nevada Faculty Alliance is now a member of the AFL-CIO's network of labor organizations.

 COLLECTIVE BARGAINING

TMCC-NFA officers attend collective bargaining training at Summer Institute

Over the first weekend in August, three TMCC Chapter officers attended the 2024 AAUP Summer Institute in Detroit, Michigan. Jim New, Jinger Doe, and Ben Davis participated in multiple training sessions covering a variety of topics, from AI in the Classroom to Academic Freedom, but focused most of their attention on conducting a successful collective bargaining campaign.

The current TMCC-NFA contract expires on June 30, 2026, but negotiations will begin more than a year before that. Based on their experience at the Summer Institute, the three of them will help organize a series of events and activities designed to solicit faculty input for contract revisions, and maintain faculty engagement throughout the process.

First steps will include information gathering through small group and one-on-one meetings, followed by campus-wide surveys to determine where the members of the bargaining unit see opportunities for improvement in the contract and our working environment. Watch for more information as the academic year gets underway.

 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Members to represent TMCC-NFA in bowling tournament for labor

A small but intrepid group of TMCC-NFA members will put it all on the line for the honor of their colleagues when they compete in the Solidarity Spares and Strikes bowling tournament to support apprenticeship programs on October 12 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno. Ben Davis, Beth Humphrey, Jon Reddick-Lau, Joe Sanpietro, and Rossi Todorova have named their team "I can't believe it's not a gutter ball." Clearly, they can use all the support they can get.

We hope you'll join us in the stands to cheer them on to victory, or at least to not embarrass themselves too badly. Mark your calendars for 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 12.
