Maynard honored as TMCC-NFA's 2nd Legacy Award Recipient at Happy Hours event

2024 Legacy Award Winner Mark Maynard

English Professor Mark Maynard became the second recipient of TMCC-NFA's Legacy Award which was presented at the year-end Happy Hours on April 26. Mark was recognized for his willingness to step-up on behalf of the Chapter. He has been a steadfast voice for faculty on the College Planning Council where he frequently must speak out in a group that consists mostly of individuals hand-picked by the President. Multiple faculty members have praised his detailed Planning Council notes, which are frequently the only source of information of the council's activities.

Four other members - Tom Cardoza, Ben Davis, Tanja Hayes, and Martha Johnson-Olin - were also nominated for the award and honored at the event.

Rebecca Porter recognized as TMCC-NFA Charter Member
|
Although collective bargaining rights were established 32 years ago at TMCC, the NFA chapter at the college was established several years before. One current faculty member, Math Professor Rebecca Porter, was among the first members in the chapter and has maintained her membership for four decades. As Becky celebrates an astonishing career of 40 years at TMCC, we celebrate her for being an unwavering member, through good times and bad, laying a foundation for years of growth and success.

Members reminded to wear NFA stoles with their commencement regalia

TMCC-NFA urges all faculty members to participate in commencement on May 10 to honor the accomplishments of our students. We also encourage chapter members to add some pomp to the circumstance and march in full regalia with the addition of the NFA satin stoles to demonstrate solidarity with their coworkers.
New members receive their stoles in the new member information packet after they submit a membership application form. Most established members should have already received their stoles either at last-year's commencement or at various events through the year. If you have not received your stole, TMCC-NFA officers will have them available in the robing area prior to the commencement ceremony.

Celebrating another year of accomplishments
|
With the academic year drawing to a close, it's time to assess the Chapter's performance based on the goals approved by members at the first meeting of the year last August, and gather input from members for new goals in the coming year.
- Bylaws revisions - The TMCC-NFA bylaws, which had not been modified in over a decade, were updated and approved by a member vote in February. The NFA State Board approved the changes in March.
- Member recruitment - Continuing the momentum from 2022-23 when the Chapter grew by 69%, the members again prioritized membership growth but increased the Executive Committee's recommendation of 15% to 30% (since the Chapter had already grown by 18% on the first day of the new academic year). As of May 1, TMCC-NFA has grown another 38% this year. With nearly 100 members in the Chapter, 53% of the academic faculty have joined, while more than 65% of current Faculty Senators belong to NFA.
- Member engagement - Several events designed to keep constituents updated on NFA activities, as well as issues impacting higher education in Nevada, were held at various times throughout the year, including the Shared Governance Summit and faculty forums on Question 1 with legislators and NSHE stakeholders.
TMCC-NFA officers will be working on proposed goals for 2024-25 in the coming weeks. With contract negotiations likely to start before the end of the next academic year, collective bargaining and contract development will likely dominate our activities. Members who wish to make suggestions for annual goals are encouraged to contact any Chapter officer. The new goals will be presented for a vote at the first Chapter meeting of 2024-25 in August.

2024-26 TMCC-NFA officers elected
|
Jim New has been elected to a second term as president of TMCC-NFA in a vote that concluded on May 3. New, who also has one more year to serve as state president of the NFA, will be joined by Jinger Doe as vice president, Amy Cavanaugh as secretary, and Ben Davis as treasurer.
Terms for the newly elected Executive Committee begin on July 1, 2024, and conclude on June 30, 2026. Developing and negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement will be one of the top priorities for the officers.
